What is a domain name?

A domain name is a website address through which an individual or organization can be known on the Internet. Having a domain name and website enables people to have access to you, your products & services and any other information that you want to be made public.

Choosing the right domain name for you or your organisation is important. Things to bear in mind when choosing a domain name are:

  1. Is it easy to remember?

  2. Would it look good?

  3. Does it create the impression you are aiming for?

  4. Does it suit the purposes of your planned site?

  5. Will it help to generate Search Engine traffic by being related to the keywords?

  6. Do you want to register different variants of the same domain name i.e. .co.uk/ .uk.com/.it?

  7. Different types of domain relate to different types of organization e.g. .com is commercial, .org is a non-profit organization. These are global and country specific.

What are top level domains? e.g .co.uk

Top level domains are like country codes in a phone number. They indicate the country the domain name is registered in. There are two different kinds of top level domains: country code and generic. Country code domains indicate a country origin (e.g., .fr for France or .jp for Japan) and generic domains indicate the area in which the registrant is active (.com - commercial, .net - network and .org - organizations) and is non-country specific.
The country code top level domains are handled by a Network Information Center (NIC) in each country, and the generic domains are administered by the American company Network Solutions (ie InterNIC).

Why does my domain name need to sit on two servers?

DNS (Domain Name System) is a system that translates a domain name to an IP number and thereby locates the server a web site is hosted on. All domain names need two DNS servers in order to be able to be located by others on the Internet.
Knowall provides you with free use of our two DNS servers when you register a domain name.

If you have your own dedicated mail or web servers, you may modify the domain servers via email to
techsupport@knowall.net.  Confirmation must be made via phone or fax,
if the request does not come from the registrants email address.

How does Mail Forwarding work?

Mail forwarding is used to provide you with a memorable email address or multiple email addresses without having to change your current mail system. For example, if you already have an email address such as domain@msn.com, Knowall can redirect all email that is sent to your NEW email address tom@yourdomain.com to your existing email address.
Mail Forwarding is a service included when you register your domain name with Knowall.
