E-mail hosting explained

Before rushing out and purchasing e-mail hosting you must ask what your exact requirements are as there are a number of different forms of e-mail delivery to your desk top.

There are 2 main types of e-mail hosting Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3), where the e-mails that you receive are automatically managed for you. And Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), where the e-mails received have to be managed by your-self

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
The objective of SMTP is to transfer mail reliably and efficiently. This is a protocol for sending e-mail messages between servers. Most e-mail systems that send mail over the Internet use SMTP to send messages from one server to another; the messages can then be retrieved with an e-mail client using POP. SMTP is the protocol most commonly used by the Internet to define how e-mail is transferred between computers.

Post Office Protocol 3
POP can be thought of as a "store-and-forward" service. POP3 is the most recent version of a standard protocol for receiving e-mails. So when e-mails are sent to your POP account, the mail is stored on your server and has to be retrieved with a login and a password. This is a client/server protocol in which e-mails are received and held for you by your Internet server. Occasionally, you (or your client e-mail receiver) check your mail-box on the server and download any mail. POP3, can be used with or without SMTP.

Web Hosting Explained

No matter who designs and manages your web site, a web site needs to have some type of computer system as a host. It is this computer system that stores your web site and is responsible for servicing requests made to it from the Internet. If you are thinking about creating your own website but do not have Internet connectivity, equipment or expertise to host the site yourself then Knowall is the type of service you will require. Even if you already have an existing site on-line and you feel that you may not be getting the best service, we are confident that we can help you.

If you have built a web site you now need to ask an Internet Service Provider to host the web site on your behalf, this will ensure when a browser types in www.yourdomainname.co.uk they will be directed to the web site you have constructed.

The cost of the hosting service will depend very much on the demands of your web site. If your web site is database driven or requires a secure environment

When it comes to hosting, the following have a consideration on the price:

        - The size of the site
        - The bandwidth required (big graphics / file downloads)
        - FrontPage compatibility PGP / SSL / Perl requirements for scripting etc . . .
        - The 'availability' of the server

Knowall web hosting is delivered through our co-location server farm housed below ground level in a dual skinned concrete lined ex-bank vault. Entry is restricted to authorised personnel through 2 one inch thick steel 'air lock' doors. The server farm is also fully alarmed and air conditioned.

Co-location Services Provides Internet, data and voice access for your equipment from simple co-location to outsourced solutions for small and large businesses.

For co-location and web servers we use 100Mbps switches linking back to a central back-bone switch over gig fibre. This allows for very high availability server clusters to ensure that customers sites are always swiftly delivered to a visitors desktop. All vital systems are monitored with technicians alerted via pagers / mobile phones if any problem arises.

Our world-wide backbone consists of fully redundant, fully meshed multi-megabit lines, which form a 'cloud' of interconnected rings. The backbone is engineered so that in the unlikely, potential event a line fails, traffic is promptly rerouted. This resilience is backed-up by triangulated connections into our Network Operations Center by four telecommunications providers. In terms of Internet bandwidth we have over 200Mbs coming into the building tracked back to both Telehouse in London and Telecity in Manchester using high capacity Frame Relay networks and private circuits.
